“We expect a smooth flight today. But before we take off, I want to make a special announcement.”

“We expect a smooth flight today. But before we take off, I want to make a special announcement.”

The Captain’s voice was a little hoarse.

“I have a very special passenger on board today. She is seated at 42A.”

Aling Nena’s eyes widened. 42A? That’s her! The passengers beside her glanced at her.

“Ten years ago, she left the Philippines to work as a maid. She scrubbed floors, washed dishes, and took care of other people’s children, just so she could send money for my Aviation School.”

Tears began to stream down Aling Nena’s face. She covered her mouth.

“She didn’t come home for a decade because she wanted to save every peso for my dream. Today is the first time she is coming home. And today is also my first flight as a Captain.”

The cockpit door opened.

A tall man came out. Dressed in a pilot’s uniform: white polo, black tie, and on his shoulders… four gold stripes (Captain’s epaulettes).

He walked down the aisle toward the back. All the passengers were watching.

When he reached Row 42, the Captain stopped.

He removed his cap. He bowed and knelt in front of Aling Nena.

“Ma…” said the pilot.

“Jay-jay…” sobbed Aling Nena. She trembled as she cupped her son’s face. “My child… you’re a Captain now…”

“Ma, this is your flight,” cried Jay-jay. “But it’s also my flight. I’m the one flying you home. You won’t have to wash clothes anymore, Ma. I’ll take care of you. I’ll take care of you.”

Captain Jay-jay hugged his mother tightly.

The entire plane applauded. Other passengers were crying too. The flight attendants wiped away tears.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” said Jay-jay to the passengers, still holding his mother. “This is my mom. My hero.”

High above the clouds, Aling Nena’s heart soared even higher.

Ten years of longing were worth it, the back pain was worth it, every drop of sweat was worth it—because the child she left behind all those years ago was now the one bringing her safely home, successful and soaring.
