That summer afternoon, Adrian Reyes, heir to one of the wealthiest families in Cebu, was driving slowly along a quiet, isolated coastal road.
In the back seat sat his mother, Mrs. Lourdes Reyes, paralyzed for two years after a severe stroke. Beside her, resting his head gently on her legs, was Max, the family dog who had been with them for more than a decade.

— “Could your mother move her arms or legs?”
Max barked again, pacing back and forth, trying to pull the officer toward the cliff.
Another officer bent down.
— “Looks like the dog is pointing something out. Dogs often react strongly after witnessing trauma.”
Rescue teams arrived and began preparing ropes to descend.
Then one of the hikers spoke, innocently:
— “He told us his mother was walking ahead… but we saw the wheelchair by the edge…”
The officer turned sharply toward Adrian.
— “What exactly did you mean by that?”
Adrian froze. The contradiction was clear.
Half an hour later, rescuers confirmed that Mrs. Lourdes Reyes had been found lifeless below.
At the same time, traffic cameras on the coastal road showed Adrian’s vehicle parked at the lookout during the estimated time of the fall.
The officer approached him again.
— “You’ll need to come with us. There are inconsistencies in your story.”
Max sat beside the officer, as if approving the decision. When Adrian tried to approach the dog, Max stepped back, letting out a low, painful growl — as if he knew exactly what Adrian had done.
Hours later, at the police station, overwhelmed by evidence and questioning, Adrian broke down. He confessed — not out of remorse, but out of fear.
