The prisoner’s last wish was to see his dog – but when the German Shepherd ran and ran into his arms, something unexpected happenedTwelve years he had been locked up in cell B-17. Every day, the same scene—the cold bars, the smell of rust, and the silence that slowly ate away at him. At first, he grew stronger. Writing letters, demanding justice, struggling to make his voice heard in the world: “I am innocent.” But as the years passed, he learned to stop. The world was deaf, justice was blind. All that remained was to accept fate.
But there was one thing he did not abandon—his dog.
He still remembered that night, how in a dirty alley he found a trembling puppy. He took it in, fed it, and it became a part of his life from then on. That German Shepherd became his only family and companion through all the storms. When he was imprisoned, parting with the dog was more painful than losing his freedom.
So when the warden arrived with a piece of paper to ask for his last wish, no one was prepared for the answer. They expected to hear the usual—a last meal, a kiss, a prayer. But his voice was low, full of longing:
— “I just want… To see my dog. One last time.”
The guards looked at each other, as if asking if this was a joke. But there was no trace of ignorance on his face. And finally, it was granted.
The day came. The prison yard was filled with a deep silence. The guards lined up, the warden stood up, and the dog was brought in—tied, trembling, but with a strange nervousness.
Seeing its master, it broke free, ran at full speed, and in an instant jumped straight into his arms. It fell, but it didn’t hesitate. For the first time in twelve years, it felt the warmth it had long craved. It hugged the dog tightly, buried its face in its thick fur, and the tears it had been holding back for so long flowed.
— “You are my son… my faithful companion…” He whispered cruelly. “What will you do when I am gone?..”
The dog seemed to be answering—whining weakly, trying to press its chest against his. The guards stood coldly in place. Some turned their backs, unable to bear to watch the separation of the two creatures as if they were one soul
It slowly looked at the warden, its eyes full of pleading.
— “Please… Take care of him. Don’t abandon him.”
A loud bark rang out. The dog, seemingly protesting, seemed to be the voice of justice long denied.
And there the unexpected began.
Suddenly the dog began to sniff, repeatedly, in the prisoner’s pocket—as if searching for something. The guards looked at each other, startled when a piece of paper he had been hiding for a long time fell out.
The warden took it. It was an old letter. His hand trembled as he opened it—and they saw a statement signed by someone: the real culprit.
An old secret document, he had put in his pocket before he was locked up. He had tried to pass it on before, but no one listened. In that moment, it seemed that the dog had revealed the truth.
All eyes were on him. Some guards covered their mouths, others stepped back. The warden, eyes wide, read the name on the paper aloud—a name that had been there for a long time, free.
Suddenly, the silence in the yard was replaced by shock. The man they had believed to be a criminal for twelve years… was innocent.
He hugged the dog tightly, his voice almost a whisper:
— “Thank you… You are my voice when no one is listening. You have seen the truth.”
And in that moment, even though it was not yet clear what would happen—whether he would be released, or whether it would be too late—one thing was certain: in his arms, through his dog, justice had come.
—
The bell rang. The hour had come.
Two guards carried him to the gallows. His feet were heavy, but he no longer resisted. In his mind, the only thing that mattered was the dog’s embrace and the last memory of it clinging to his chest.
The German Shepherd barely managed to come along, pulled by a guard but kept barking—loudly, continuously, as if demanding justice.
As he was tied to the stand, everything was silent. Nothing could be heard but the heavy breathing of the onlookers. The warden stood to the side, still clutching the paper that had fallen from the prisoner’s pocket. Inside, his thoughts were heating up.
“Ready?” asked one of the officers.
The executioner was about to raise his hand as a signal – but suddenly a loud voice shouted.
— “STOP EVERYTHING!”
Everyone turned their heads. The warden himself shouted, holding the old document.
He approached, his voice trembling:
— “There is evidence! What a pitiful man!”
The entire room was shocked. The guards looked at each other, some immediately stopping what they were doing. On the other hand, the dog continued to growl, as if he himself was testifying to the truth. The warden immediately took the document to a court official who was there to witness the verdict. It was read aloud—a statement signed by the real criminal, long hidden, and only now revealed.
The people in the room were in a state of uproar. Some guards clenched their fists, others wept, as if they could not believe that for twelve years, the wrong man had been imprisoned.
And there, before the final order could be given, the chain was lowered from his hand.
The prisoner they had thought was a criminal—now a man given another chance to live.
The dog jumped up, chased his master with all his might, and once again clutched his chest. This time, it was no longer a farewell. It was an embrace of freedom.
Amidst all the eyes, there was a man who had tasted justice once more—and a dog had become the true savior.
