Father and daughter missing in the Himalayas: Five years later, some trekkers discover the truth hidden in the cracks

Five years ago, Jayesh Sharma and his nine-year-old daughter Tara disappeared. It seemed that the Himalayas would swallow them up forever. The case remained in the news for weeks in 2020, when the two embarked on a short and relatively safe trek. With the passage of time, without any clues or hints, the official search operation was called off. The family was broken and exhausted, but they were still hoping that perhaps Jayesh and Tara had started a new life somewhere far away. At the same time, realists believed that they might have fallen in some inaccessible place.

Nothing happened for years. That was until at the end of August, a trekking couple from Dharamsala decided to explore the less traveled area. Among the deep rocks, Ram noticed that something was visible from the gray surface of the rock. He leaned over, flashed the light from his mobile flashlight and saw that a rectangular object was covered with dust and moisture.

—”This… looks like a bag,” —she said softly, without daring to touch it.

Suman came closer. She dusted off the tag with her fingers and both of their eyes widened.

—”Jayesh Sharma.” ”

His heart began to beat hard. It couldn’t have been a coincidence. The bag was stuck between two rocks, as if it had fallen from a crack above. The couple took photos and sent them to the police. Within a few hours, special rescue teams arrived by helicopter and cordoned off the area.

Inspector Morrell, who was involved in the search operation five years ago, opened the bag wearing gloves. Inside they found: a small metal water box, packed snacks, a wrinkled map… And something that shook his spirit: Tara’s blue diary.

Media pressure suddenly returned. The family was informed and a crowd of journalists rushed to the area. But the mountain wasn’t responding easily.

The crack where the bag was found was only fifty centimeters wide, but extended several meters down and up. Experts said it was possible that Jayesh might have gone down in search of a shortcut or a place of refuge and got stuck.

Nevertheless, Inspector Morrell was not satisfied. There was something strange: the bag was almost insulated, there were no traces of a long fall. There was a mark from a ballpoint on the map, which was not in the copies checked five years ago.

—”It all doesn’t match,” —Morel said softly. —”If Jayesh wrote this after it was lost… So we have to figure out why. ”

The resumption of the investigation became an enigma. And the next day, when the team began to descend further into the rift, what they found completely changed the interpretation of the case.

The rescue team started landing early in the morning. They installed ropes, anchors and thermal sensors. The crack was narrow and wet, and seemed to swallow up every meter of light. The sound of the wind was left behind, replaced by a thick silence, as if this wind had been stuck there for centuries.

Eight meters down they found the first important clue: a piece of red cloth, possibly part of Jayesh’s windsling. It was torn, but not due to a fall; It seemed to have been deliberately placed, as if for a sign.

—”It’s intentional,” —Morrell said. —”Jayesh was trying to show the way. ”

This principle had always been a concern for the family: Jayesh was among the experienced trekkers. Their sudden disappearance on a trek with moderate difficulty was not rational. But if for some reason they had chosen an alternative path, perhaps to avoid a sudden storm, it was prudent to leave the sign.

Three meters further down they found a second clue: a small metal packet, the expiration date of which was two years after the disappearance. It amazed them. It seemed that someone—not necessarily Jayesh—had taken food there after 2020.

—”Was anyone using this crack to hide?” —a technician asked.

—”Or someone found Jayesh and Tara and didn’t tell anyone,” Morrell replied.

From this point on, the descent became more difficult. The crack spread to the side, becoming uneven cave-like. Upon putting on the lights, they saw that it was a small makeshift camp: the remains of a thermal blanket, an empty box, a small rope and a half-wet notebook at the bottom.

Morel opened it carefully. Many pages were almost unreadable, but some words stood out: “can’t go up”, “wait”, “hurt”, “voices were heard.” There was no name, but the handwriting seemed to be Jayesh’s.

The scariest line was found on the middle page:

“I can’t move. He should stay…”

The sentence was cut abruptly, as if Jayesh had suddenly stopped writing.

—”Something serious has happened here,” —said Morrell. —”Jayesh was injured and Tara was still alive. ”

The most likely hypothesis was that they were trapped after a partial fall. But one essential thing was missing: there was no body there. And given the depth of the cave, it seemed impossible that they could have left alone without leaving a trace.

During the search of the cave, a rescue worker noticed marks on the wall: three long vertical lines were repeated several times, probably some kind of starting code, which was used to count the days.

—”There are at least thirty marks,” —she pointed out.

Thirty days. Stuck for a month.

The media pressure increased and the police increased the search area. For the first time a strange hypothesis appeared: that someone else could also get involved.

The idea was reinforced when, at the end of the day, a rescue worker found a new, modern rope, which neither belonged to Jayesh, nor Tara, nor to the team at work.

—”Someone was here,” —said Morel, looking up at the mountain as if he could answer.

But the mountain remained silent.

The next day, what he found told his own story.

The discovery of the third day was decisive. The search was extended towards the upper rift, where the rock formed a long vertical corridor, with small platforms and bulges. According to experts, a person could barely walk there… But a nine-year-old girl is not alone.

Twenty meters up they found traces of recent human activity: light footprints, as if one had climbed up on the toes. The strange thing was that these marks seemed very recent at the time of the disappearance.

The key was found when a rescue worker noticed a metal star-like ring between the loose stones. The family immediately confirmed that it belonged to Tara, her favorite amulet, which she wore since the age of five.

But the biggest shock came when, three hours later, on a natural bulge, among the dry bushes, they found a metal first-aid box. The edges were rusty, but this was clearly intentional. Inside bandages, remnants of medicine… And a note was carefully placed in a plastic bag.

Morrell opened the note. The trembling handwriting dispelled any doubts:

“If someone finds it, help him.” It wasn’t his fault. He came back, but he wasn’t. We couldn’t go down. I tried to ask for help. If the star is alive… Please take care of him. ”

This message shook everyone. “He’s back”? Who was that “he”?

The family shared a horrific detail: A few weeks before he disappeared, Jayesh had a quarrel with a man named Ayush, who was his old trekking partner. Aayush had publicly alleged that Jayesh took over their joint photography project. Their friendship was ended abruptly and bitterly.

The police launched a separate investigation against Ayush. It turned out that Ayush was in the Himalayas at the time of his disappearance… But he never accepted.

Meanwhile, the team found natural drainage in the upper part of the crack, a narrow cave that opened into a forested area away from the main trail. There, under the layers of leaves, they found traces of the old makeshift camp: the remains of fire, rusty knives and some food packets.

And among those items were found something extremely frightening: a small shoe, which belonged to Tara, and the remains of her clothes. There were no bones, which meant that the baby could have escaped alive from that point.

—”It changes everything,” —Morrell said. —”They were here, but gone. And not alone. ”

The final investigation revealed that Ayush had been spotted in the area by local shepherds. The most convincing hypothesis is that he found Jayesh and Tara after the accident. Instead of helping immediately, she tried to resolve the personal dispute, which led to the separation of Jayesh and Tara leaving Tara completely insecure.

Ayush was temporarily detained, but he insisted on his innocence. Said he saw Jayesh, but when he returned with help, they were not there.

The most painful question still remains unanswered: what really happened to Tara?

The team continued the search for weeks. Separate marks were found, but the body was never found. Authorities believe that Tara was placed in a remote village or tried to walk alone in search of help.

The case, which reopened after five years, is still active. And even though the mountain has revealed most of its secrets, its most important truth is still hidden.

The baby may possibly still be alive.
